About this project
The Goal
Learn how to build a vanilla JavaScript web application
I wanted to understand front-end development beyond my basic HTML and CSS knowledge. The plan was to build something interactive from scratch and see what happened. What started as a cursor effect experiment turned into a full drawing app that taught me more about code than any YouTube video I ever watched.
The Problem
Vibe coding is harder than it looks
I had romanticized ideas about using AI to code, but my early attempts were clunky and frustrating. Without real JavaScript skills, I was guessing my way through interactions and animations. The gap between what I could envision and what I could actually build was wide enough to kill my vibe (pun intended).
The Solution
I committed to learning the fundamentals properly
I took a weekend workshop on HTML canvas and JavaScript visual effects. Understanding the principles behind interactive graphics changed how I approached the build. Then I used Claude to help structure the application logic while I focused on the visual details and user experience. This drawing app began as a cursor effect experiment and spiraled (in a good way) into something a lot more fun. It’s an interactive canvas that reflects how I think, work, and create.
The Impact
I fell in love with front-end development and kept going.
Understanding how interfaces actually work made me a better designer and a more effective collaborator with developers.
